Restorative dentistry

  • Composite fillings
  • Tooth Coloured Fillings

A popular choice for those who don’t want their fillings to show, composite is a mixture of plastic and glass, which actually bonds to the rest of the tooth. Composites are more expensive than amalgam fillings, and the newer materials can hold up almost as long. Less drilling of the tooth is necessary when placing composite as compared to amalgam.

Enameloplasty

Enameloplasty is also known as:

  • odontoplasty
  • tooth recontouring
  • tooth reshaping
  • tooth stripping
  • tooth shaving

The procedure is typically performed on front teeth for aesthetic reasons, such as fixing a chipped tooth or making teeth a more uniform length.

Using an instrument such as a burr, drill, or sanding disc, your dentist will remove enamel to shape and contour a tooth to the desired appearance. Once the tooth is shaped to the desired appearance, your dentist will polish it.

Your enamel does not have nerves, so there is no pain.
The length of time for the procedure depends on how many teeth need to be shaped. It typically takes no more than 30 minutes.

There is no recovery time. The procedure is simple, quick, and painless.

Since enamel does not grow back, the procedure only needs to be done once. The results are permanent.

Diastema treatment (space closer)

A diastema is a space between front teeth. Diastemas are closed by orthodontics, veneers, laminate and restoration. A highly successful technique is addition of composite. A space which is too large and closed with composite, veneers and laminate results in teeth that are esthetically too wide and orthodontics is recommended.

Gum depigmentation

Gum depigmentation, also known as gum bleaching, is a procedure used in cosmetic dentistry to lighten or remove black spots or patches on the gums consisting of melanin. Melanin in skin is very common in inhabitants in many parts of the world due to genetic factors. Melanin pigmentation in skin, oral mucosa, inner ear and other organs is a detoxification mechanism. Some toxic agents bind to melanin and will move out of the tissue with the ageing cells and are expelled to the tissue surfaces.

Also in the gums and oral mucosa a visible pigmentation is most often caused by genetic factors, but also by tobacco smoking or in a few cases by long-term use of certain medications. If stopping smoking or change of medication do not solve the problem with a disfiguration melanin pigmentation, a surgical operation may be performed. The procedure itself can involve laser ablation techniques.

A dental laser can target and ablate the melanocytes, thus reducing the production of melanin in the gingival tissue. Following laser depigmentation, the gingiva heals by secondary intention. This results in a lighter and more uniform color of the gums. A study found that (Er,Cr:YSGG) laser was effective and there were no signs of re-pigmentation after a 6-month follow up period
